PENRICE'S HAITI CAMPAIGN PDF  | Print |
In the weeks following the Haiti earthquake students at Penrice made an incredible fundraising effort which included a charity single written and recorded at the college by staff and students which was played on local and regional radio.

Local businesses also got involved to help out with production costs so that all the funds raised by CD sales were able to go straight to Shelterbox.

As if that wasn’t enough students have now made a ‘pop video’ DVD with the help of local company Media Seven.  Both the CD and DVD are available at the college’s reception desk for a donation.

Penrice’s International and Haiti Fundraising Coordinator Lenka Chanter said, “I’d like to thank all the students, staff and members of the local community who have worked so hard or helped in any way to make our college fundraising campaign such a success.”

HOPE 4 HAITI ROYAL PERFORMANCE

The Penrice Haiti Fundraising campaign took an expected turn when Penrice students were invited perform their Hope 4 Haiti single to HRH Camilla Duchess of Cornwall.

The live performance took place on Tuesday 2nd March at the Cornish charity Shelterbox’s Helston Headquarters where HRH Camilla, the charity’s President and Royal Patron, was making a visit.

She praised the "strength and ability" of ShelterBox staff  who have sent more than 8,000 Shelterboxes to Haiti.  Penrice’s fundraising campaign has raised £5,781 - enough for at least 11 Shelterboxes.  After touring the charity’s warehouse, inspecting the boxes and tents the royal guest was treated to a live performance of the charity single Hope 4 Haiti, by Penrice Community College students who were accompanied by the college’s International Coordinator Lenka Chanter and the college’s Head of Music Richard Jones.

TOTAL SO FAR... £5,781!

After an amazing and intense of fund-raising campaign the Penrice community - students, staff, parents, families and friends at Penrice Community College has raised a fantastic £5,781 for Haiti - enough to buy 11 Shelterboxes.

Fund raising activities included cakes sales, a car wash, a sponsored bike ride and a staff raffle. The many hundreds of individual and group fundraisers included members of a Year 8 class (8VH) who raised over £70 by donating  their small change.  Year 7 student Megan Baker raised £66 by making and selling cards. Maintenance staff at Penrice, who have been picking up coins they found left lying around the school’s grounds during the last year, are donating the cash - a staggering £100 - to the appeal. One person, who wishes to remain anonymous donated £500 and two members of staff donated £200 each.

As if that wasn’t enough students and staff also got together to write and record a charity single - Hope 4 Haiti.  Staff ran a competition for students to write the lyrics but the entries were so good it proved too difficult to pick one out.  It was decided to combine the best lyrics and put them to music composed by the music teachers.

Recording sessions with staff and students took just two days.  Head of Music Richard Jones said, “We had more people than we could fit into Penrice’s recording studio so we ran several sessions.” The single had its first public play over the college radio on was also played of Radio Cornwall and Pirate FM.  Head of Music Richard Jones said, “It’s been very well received and we’re all delighted.”

To top it all local businesses rallied round to help with the production costs and worked to produce a batch of CDs which were sold at the college. Lenka Chanter, Penrice’s International Coordinator who came up with the idea for the charity single and organised its production said, “We’ve had fantastic support from students, staff and local businesses. I’d like to say a huge thank you to the anonymous member of our community that donated £500 to our original appeal and to ‘Turn it Round Records’ who produced the CDs.  Also, lots of thanks to Tesco, Frost Builders Ltd and Charlestown Joinery who all pledged contributions towards the single’s production costs.”

In a final bid to raise enough money to buy ten Shelterboxes for Haiti before the half term holidays Penrice’s charity single was well and truly launched into the local community when the Tesco agreed to stock the CD at its St Austell store. Tesco’s Community Champion Nick Wilder said, “We’re very pleased to be able to support Penrice’s by having their CDs at our checkouts.”

Lenka Chanter, Penrice’s International Coordinator said, “Everyone has been brilliant. We set out to raise £500 so we could buy just one Shelterbox. Now we’ve raised  £5,781 - enough for an amazing eleven shelter boxes.”

On Saturday 6th February at 7:30pm., after its first live public performance during a charity concert at Truro Methodist Church, students and staff were given a staggering £220 in donations.  Mrs Chanter said, “It was a brilliant concert full of beautiful music. Penrice students and staff were quite an incredible group and sang an amazing live version of Hope 4 Haiti.  She added, “Thanks to the generosity of one local firm we have also been able to make a DVD to go with the single.”

CDs and DVDs are available from the college’s reception area, Mrs Chanter said, “We are asking for a minimum donation of £1 and £2 respectively.” She added, “The CD is also available as a download for a donation at justgiving.com.”  She continued, “All the money raised by Hope 4 Haiti will go to Shelterbox.”  The track can be downloaded at http://www.justgiving.com/songforhaiti

STUDENTS’ HOPE 4 HAITI DVD

Just before half term we worked with local company, Media Seven, to produce a 'pop video' featuring all the students and some of the staff who performed the original song. Once again, thanks to generous sponsorship from Media Seven, Charlestown Joinery, Frost Builders Ltd and  Cornwall Council we have not paid anything for the production of the DVD and every penny will go to Shelterbox. The students involved also learnt a lot about film making and the world of media production.

You can obtain the DVD, for a donation of £2 from Penrice’s Reception Desk. Snippets of the DVD will also be viewable online courtesy of Cornwall Channel, an internet based TV channel, at http://www.cornwallchannel.co.uk

Everyone on Penrice’s Hope 4 Haiti fundraising team would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the kind people whose generosity has helped raise funds for Haiti. If you think a CD or DVD would make the perfect present for a relative or friend you can make a donation  towards Shelterbox at the reception desk at college or donate online at http://www.justgiving.com/songforhaiti.
